BIOLOGY 421 - PARASITOLOGY

COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:

This course emphasizes the taxonomy, morphology, and host-parasite relationships of the major parasites of humans and other selected animals.

Credit Hours:

Four semester hours.

Prerequisites:

Biology 122, General Zoology; Biology 320, Invertebrate Zoology is strongly recommended. Successful completion of this course requires that the student have the ability to read, take accurate notes and assimilate large amounts of diverse information. The student should also have an understanding of basic microscopy and techniques of dissection.

Course Objectives:

Present parasitism as an ecological relationship. Acquaint students with the morphology and host-parasite relationships of the major parasites of humans and other animals. Discuss the pathogenicity of these parasites. Develop the skills necessary for identification of these parasites.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the major groups of parasitic organisms and the life history, pathology, symptomatology, and epidemiology of selected taxa. Participate in laboratory exercises. Demonstrate a working knowledge of morphology. Accountable for sight recognition of the major groups of parasitic organisms and their life cycle stages and specific identification of selected taxa. Complete an acceptable laboratory notebook and term paper; description provided.

COURSE MATERIALS:

Required Text: Foundations of Parasitology, 6th Edition, by L.S. Roberts and J. Janovy, Jr.

Library Reserve: Parasites in Human Tissues, by T.C. Orihel and L.R. Ash and Atlas of Human Parasitology, 4th Edition, by L.S. Ash and T. Orihel.
