Dusky Dolphins
Dusky Dolphins can be found in coastal temperature waters of South Africa, New Zealand, and South America.
Description
The Dusky Dolphin is small and compact with a short dark beak and gently sloping forehead. This dolphin has a blue to black tail and back. The underside of the body is white, and whitish-grey in color. The tips of the snout and lower jaw are dark. A grey area extends from the eye down to the flipper. Two diagonal whitish streaks run forward from tail up past the base of dorsal fin. There are 24-36 pairs of small, pointed teeth about 3mm in diameter in each jaws. The upper jaw ususally has 2 less teeth than the lower. The Dusky Dolphin eats anchovies, squid, and schools of shrimp. They live in groups of 6 to 15 dolphins. They are very active dolphins and jump as a school many times. They swim as fast as 20 knots. They weigh from 110 to 200 pounds.
