Environmental Sciences Internship

The Environmental Sciences major concludes with an internship at one of several intern sites concerned with environmental quality, control, or regulation. The sites include waste disposal firms, environmental health departments, paper mills, chemical companies, municipal public works, electric power generating facilities, testing laboratories, etc. The intern works the typical work week at the intern site for the duration of the internship (12-13 weeks), where he or she is introduced to various activities including, but not limited to, sampling, instrumentation analysis, report writing, and regulation. This "hands-on" experience gives the student a distinct advantage when seeking employment and qualifies the student to apply for various environmental science jobs available with federal and state agencies and in the private sector. The student also earns 12 semester hours of academic credit for the internship.  A grade is assigned based upon a written report, daily log of activities submitted by the student, and an evaluation submitted by the Site Director.

To be eligible for the internship the student must have senior status, complete all course requirements listed under the Environmental Sciences Comprehensive Pattern and have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 (some sites require a 3.0).

During the semester before the internship, students are required to schedule several meetings with the Internship Coordinator. The Coordinator will describe the internship experience, discuss the daily log and internship report and lead the student through the application process. The student will receive instruction in the preparation of the application package.  Additionally, the Internship Coordinator will help students develop skills in resume and cover letter preparation. The Coordinator will forward the application package to the site. The Site Director makes the final decision to accept or reject any application. The student will be notified directly by the site and should be available for an interview, if requested. The student must also register for EN 409, Environmental Sciences Internship, and apply for a degree.
