Environmental Sciences

Bachelor's Degree Program

UWA offers a 53 semester-hour comprehensive bachelor of science major in Environmental Sciences. The program provides the basic knowledge and training needed to work in a number of environmentally-related fields. Waste disposal companies, paper mills, chemical companies, testing laboratories, state and federal agencies responsible for monitoring environmental quality, and environmental consulting firms hire environmental scientists. As public awareness of environmental quality grows, this field will offer promising and rewarding careers in great numbers.  Although it is not required, many of our environmental science comprehensive majors add a minor into their program of study to enhance their marketability after graduation.

The curriculum includes general education courses, science and mathematics core courses, and a variety of courses in the areas of biology, chemistry, geology, and physics as well as courses specific to the environmental sciences degree program (see sample schedule below for details).   During the student's senior year, they intern at one of a number of internship sites with which UWA is affiliated.  Student's receive 12 semester hours of academic credit for this internship, as well as gaining work experience in environmentally related activities before graduating.  The program of study can be completed in a traditional four year time frame, but completing some of the degree requirements during a summer semester, or  spending a full eight semesters on campus and completing the internship during the summer after the fourth year are both popular options that our majors have used in the past.

Students are also required to take TY 352, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. This course provides training in accordance with OSHA regulations [29 CFR 1910.120 (e)(p) and 29 CFR 1910.121]. The training and increased awareness afforded by this course prepares graduates to perform safely and effectively in the workplace. Students can earn a "40-Hour Certificate of Completion" which should be an asset when seeking employment after graduation. During the student's senior year, they intern at one of a number of intern sites with which UWA is affiliated. Students receive 12 semester hours of academic credit for this internship, as well as gain experience in environmentally related activities before graduating.
