The story goes that around the turn of the century, a man, a woman, and their little girl lived in this house. The little girl was an only child, so she had to play by herself most of the time. She spent most of her time in her bedroom playing with her dolls and an elaborate dollhouse. On her fifth birthday, her father told her that after he came home from work, he was going to bring her a special present. Well, when he came home at 5:00, his daughter was sitting by the door waiting for him. She jumped up and grabbed the big box that the placed in her arms. She tore open the lid and a little furry face stared out at her from under an old towel. It was a two-week old puppy. She grabbed the little puppy and hugged him. Her mother and father smiled, because she now had the playmate that she had always wanted. She took the puppy into her bedroom and played with him the rest of the evening. When it was time to go to bed, her mother heard the little girl scream. She ran into the room and found her daughter sitting on the floor holding her hand. She complained that her puppy had nipped her finger. Her mother washed the girl’s finger and then put her to bed.

A couple of weeks later, the little girl became very sick. Her parents put her to bed and called the doctor. The doctor examined her and said that she had come down with rabies and that there was not much he could do for her. A few days later, the little girl and the puppy died of the same disease.

Many years later, the building became a fraternity house. It underwent extensive renovation before the guys moved in. They even knocked down a wall. Supposedly, whenever you do that or make any serious changes [in the architecture], you run the risk of stirring up the spirits of the house. Well, the story goes that during the homecoming parade, people who marched by noticed a little girl sitting inside a window up near a balcony. They started pointing up toward the second floor of the building, and people standing along the street saw her too. She made several other appearances at the window over the years, but she was usually sighted during homecoming.

The building is now the University Bookstore, and the ladies who work there claim that the little girl’s ghost is still there. They won’t talk much about her except to say that they have heard noises late in the evening, and one lady has even seen her.
