If you came here expecting finely polished tales of terror, you will be sorely disappointed. The stories included in this site were told by ordinary citizens of Alabama. None of them were trained storytellers. The settings featured in the stories represent the best-known haunted places in the entire state. Our goal was to demonstrate how the oral tradition that created these old tales is still thriving. The stories were transcribed just as they were told so as to recreate the storytelling experience for the reader. As you pore over these stories, just imagine yourself seated before an open fireplace in an old cabin, listening to an elderly relative spinning ghost yarns on a dark, winter night. Hopefully, you will agree that the best ways of really scaring people are the old ones.
